Chapter 18

Lunch ends up being sandwiches from a little deli around the corner from the Fairview City Police Department eaten over our laps. While everybody else's desks are cluttered with paperwork without any rhyme, reason, or order, Detective Clint Patterson's workspace is pristine. There are all sorts of organizing bins, pens in little compartments, and even color coordination and style that looks like it’s out of an IKEA showroom.

He doesn't have his own office, but his desk is by a large window that bathes everything in white light. We sit on chairs across from him and there's plenty of space to put down our food, which wouldn't be the case with any of the nearby officers. The desktop itself looks like it has been recently polished, pristine like the Apple Store. The FBI has been called in and we are introduced to special agent, Jennifer Rivers, a woman in her thirties with almond eyes, shoulder-length sandy hair, and a dry sense of humor that I find particularly appealing.

Thankfully, there's no posturing, no power struggle. She's there to help the department and to help us get to the bottom of what has happened. She listens carefully, takes notes in a black Moleskin leather notebook in small, neat print. She writes fast and the ink doesn't always have time to dry, smearing a little bit.

Chomping down on his Reuben sandwich, I can immediately sense a change in Donald’s demeanor.

Finally, everyone is listening to his story, really listening, hanging on to every word, and believing the connections that he made, no matter how farfetched.

The first victim that he speaks of is a teenage runaway named Bree Zander. She was last seen in her room and there was footage of her riding a bus to Tacoma. She had started a job at Book Nook, which was owned by Frances Meeks, a woman in her fifties.

Swallowing another bite, Donald wipes his mouth and says, "Only Frances Meeks did not know that Bree Zander was Bree Zander. She only knew her by the name Danny Lofton. She was the one who had reported her missing when she didn’t show up for work and frankly, she seemed more concerned about her whereabouts than her own parents.”

“How did she go missing?” Jennifer asks.

“She was working the evening shift, in charge of closing. She was supposed to be there again the next afternoon, but she never showed up. Danny or Bree told Frances that she had moved to Tacoma with her parents, and she was going to the local school there, but that was not the case.”

“How did she not know her real name?” Clint asks. “Wasn’t there paperwork?”

“Apparently Frances was only going to work the store herself. She took pity on this girl who asked her for a job. She had no plans to hire anyone, so she didn’t know how to set up payroll. She was paying her cash and Bree was obviously completely fine with that.”

“Her parents never reported her missing?” Jennifer asks.

He nods.

“Yes, they did,
